Following an extended tour throughout the South, in which he gathered ideas, impressions, and observations to disabuse readers of the notion of one undifferentiated region, “the Solid South,” Daniels published A Southerner Discovers the South (1938). In reviewing this book, Brown expressed his appreciation for the unprecedented effort Daniels made to explode this myth about the South. His only concern was that Daniels, in representing the experiences of African Americans, failed to explore them introduction 11 broadly enough.

Don’t put no fuss and feathers on his shoulders, Lord. Let him know it’s heaven, Let him keep his hat, his vest, his elkstooth, and everything. Let him have his spats and cane. It is not enough to sprinkle “dis’s and dat’s” to be a Negro folk-poet, or to jingle rhymes and juggle popularized clichés traditional to sentimental minor poetry for generations. One must study the intimate thought of the people who can only state it in an ejaculation, or a metaphor, or at best a proverb, and translate that into an articulate attitude, or a folk philosophy or a daring fable, with Aesopian clarity and simplicity—and above all, with Aesopian candor.

Among the writers of poetry in this smaller group the five names most outstanding are: Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes and Sterling Brown. ” In their approach to “race” they are less direct and obvious, less didactic or imploratory; and, too, they are less regardful of the approval or disapprobation of their white environment. Sterling A. Brown is one of this group and therefore has been instrumental in bringing about the more propitious era in which the Negro artist now finds himself, and in doing that he has achieved a place in the list of young American poets.
