29 The new organization welcomed any Israelite of good moral character between the ages of eighteen and sixty who was recommended by two members of the association. Nevertheless, a prospective member had to be approved by ballot by a committee of investigation and, in the practice of the day, could be rejected by three black balls. 30 Officers of the AssociationPresident Moses Ullman, VicePresident Alexander Sanger, and Secretary August J. Rosenfield, along with Emanuel Tillmanwere established Jewish businessmen in the rapidly growing town even though they, like their fellow members, had lived in the city for less than a year.

I also relied heavily upon Rabbi David Lefkowitz's correspondence covering his thirty-five-year career at Emanu-El as well as Rabbi Levi Olan's letters and scrapbooks dating from 1949-1970. Interviews completed over several decades played a crucial part in my interpretation of events. I am most appreciative of the more than fifty congregants who allowed me to record their recollections and of other members and rabbis of the congregation who were previously taped as part of the oral history program led by Joan Loeb and Evelyn Eldridge.

Often the ruler of these countries limited his Jewish subjects' choice of occupation, living quarters, travel, and, in Bavaria, even the opportunity for marriage. Furthermore, many young boys left at age sixteen to escape conscription into the army. Most of the emigrants were the poorer classes. The more prosperous Jews and Gentiles moved to the larger cities in Europe. Upon arrival in America, a Jewish immigrant from central Europe had two advantages that helped him cope successfully in his new environment.
